Just a post, get over it.

Another astounding post from The Border House: Naming violations in World of Warcraft. (Needless to say, this has a trigger warning.)

I get it, I really do, that impulse to say “it’s just a [insert thing I consider trivial here], get over it” because how many times now has someone said this to me? Maybe eleventy gajillion? No? It just feels that way.

Rape is not trivial. It has never been trivial, and it never will be trivial. Those of us who have survived it will keep reminding the world of this, regardless of its attempts to marginalize us.

Joking about rape perpetuates the idea that rape can be a joke. And saying “get over it” is the equivalent of a pat on the head. It is one person judging how traumatic another’s experiences are, and telling that person how to feel about it.

Don’t even get me started on that Penny Arcade strip.
